About Kathryn Scullin
It has been my lifelong dream to seek a Fine Art Degree. I attended Southern Illinois University and graduated with a BFA with an emphasis in metalsmithing and sculpture.
The inspiration for much of my work is drawn from nature itself. The raw emotion displayed in my work is to remind myself and others of the delicate balance between us and nature.... How beauty fades and the cycle of renewal begins.
About Works
Each work is a unique piece of art. The process begins by either hammering, enameling, casting or fabricating metal into contemporary sculptural pieces. Most of the techniques used are still unchanged from thousands of years ago.
History of Metalsmithing
The art of shaping metal can be traced as far back in time as the Bronze and Iron Ages. The products created by metalsmiths have evolved from necessities to works of art, but most of the techniques, tools and materials have remained the same. Metalsmiths were once the manufacturers of all things metal, including tools, axes, armor, horseshoes, nails, etc. Many of these items are now mass-produced by machines, allowing today's metalsmith to concentrate his craft on handmade art and jewelry pieces. Metalsmiths still use hammers, anvils and other hand tools to carefully transform raw metal into useful and beautiful works.
